Northwest Veterans for Peace was founded during the buildup for the Persian Gulf war when a small group of veterans got together in a hallway, outside an anti-war activist meeting, where they talked of their shared experiences and concerns over 'just another war'. We now are comprised of veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, and Somalia, and many committed supporters. We have about thirty active members and other, less active supporters. We operate from our homes in and around Portland, Oregon where we do outreach to veterans and their family members in need of support. We also have a speakers bureau for the schools around our area,. We spoke in about eighty classrooms last year. We believe a youth well educated in the reality of war can only benefit society. We do not believe the young people are receiving a balanced perspective on war in today's society. If the true consequences of war are not shared person to person, it is more likely to be accepted as an alternative to settling international disputes. "The first casualty of war is truth."
